Our aims: . to eliminate racism; . to safeguard and strengthen the rights of workers, women, farmers and minority groups, upon whom the welfare of the entire nation depends; . to maintain and protect our civil rights and liberties in the face of persistent attacks upon them; . to use the law as an instrument for the protection of the people, rather than for their repression. Torture is local and global. From the Jon Burge / Chicago police torture scandal to the case of Muhammad Salah, torture must not be tolerated. Torture is immoral and illegal. Torture is always wrong, no matter who does it, or why. Torturing suspects yields unreliable information. Torture produces false confessions. Torture survivors suffer lasting trauma. A terrorist, police detective, intelligence officer, or soldier, who tortures a hostage or a person in custody a commits a crime that is morally indistinguishable from child abuse and rape. Torture survivors are entitled to redress, including due process under law and monetary damages. Torturers should be prosecuted. Denounce torture.
