The National Lawyers Guild is dedicated to the need for basic and progressive change in the structure of our political and economic system. Through its members -- lawyers, law students, jailhouse lawyers, and legal workers united in chapters and committees -- the Guild works locally, nationally and internationally as an effective political and social force in the service of the people. Our aims: . to eliminate racism; . to safeguard and strengthen the rights of workers, women, farmers and minority groups, upon whom the welfare of the entire nation depends; . to maintain and protect our civil rights and liberties in the face of persistent attacks upon them; . to use the law as an instrument for the protection of the people, rather than for their repression. Class Certification in "M20" Case! Were you one of more than 850 people swept up in the March 20, 2003, mass arrest at the start of the Iraq War?You are now a member of a class action lawsuit. Thousands protesting the illegal war marched from the Federal plaza through the Loop until Chicago police, including mounted and riot officers, surrounded them at Michigan and Chicago. Bystanders and observers were blocked in as well. Those arrested spent from four to 40 hours in hot, crowded holding cells. Practically all charges against demonstrators were dropped. Lawyers from the National Lawyers Guild sued on behalf o f 11 "named plaintiffs" who told the court that their cases were typical of what happened to people in the mass arrest. A Federal judge agreed. On Monday, April 1 7, 2006, Judge Virginia M. Kendall of the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois ordered the case to proceed as a class action. Congratulations named plaintiffs, class members, and legal team! City of Chicago et al., 03 -C-2463 We Are Attorneys Who Defend Your Right to Dissent On March 20, 2003 - the day after the Iraq War began - thousands of demonstrators poured onto the streets of Chicago to protest the illegal miltary action. When hundreds of demonstrators were trapped and arrested by Chicago police, a cadre of NLG attorneys came to support them - and their fundamental right to dissent. |
